Hartford is one of the oldest cities in the United States, with its founding dating back to 1635. Originally known as the "House of Hope" by Dutch traders, Hartford has a storied past. In 1875, the city became the sole capital of Connecticut, having previously shared the title with New Haven since 1701.

Architectural Landmarks

Hartford is home to impressive architectural feats, including the state capitol building, which was constructed in 1879. Made of marble and granite, the capitol also contains the tombstone of Israel Putnam, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. Another notable site is Coltsville National Historic Park, which adds to the city’s rich architectural heritage.

Business and Industry

Hartford has long been a center of business and industry. Often referred to as the "Insurance City," Hartford is home to numerous large insurance companies that have played a significant role in shaping the city's economy.

A Hub of Culture

Hartford boasts a vibrant cultural scene. The city is home to the Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public art museum in the United States, and Bushnell Park, the country’s oldest publicly funded park. These landmarks, along with many other cultural venues, make Hartford a dynamic place to explore the arts.

Hartford is also famously associated with Mark Twain, one of America’s greatest authors. Twain lived in Hartford from 1871 and penned some of his most famous works in his home here. Today, visitors can tour the Mark Twain House, which remains a popular attraction.

In addition to its rich history and cultural offerings, Hartford has a variety of attractions for visitors to enjoy. The Connecticut Historical Society Museum, Mortenson Riverfront Plaza, and the miles of walking trails provide plenty of opportunities to explore the city’s natural beauty and historical depth.
