Chicopee is a vibrant city located on the Connecticut River in Hampden County, Massachusetts. As part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area, Chicopee has a rich history and diverse community that reflects its origins as a collection of villages in the northernmost part of Springfield, from which it seceded in 1848.

A City of Distinctive Neighborhoods

Chicopee is composed of several neighborhoods, each with its own unique character. These neighborhoods—Aldenville, Willimansett, Chicopee Center (Cabotville), Chicopee Falls, and Fairview—originated as separate villages and still retain much of their historical charm. While these areas were once defined by the predominant nationalities of their immigrant populations, primarily Polish and French Canadian, today they are home to a diverse mix of cultures, creating a rich tapestry of community life.

A Military and Educational Hub

Chicopee is proud to be home to Westover Air Reserve Base, established in 1940. This base features one of the largest runways on the East Coast, measuring 11,597 by 301 feet. The presence of Westover Air Reserve Base highlights Chicopee's strategic importance and its role in national defense.

In addition to its military significance, Chicopee is also an educational center, with Elms College located within the city. This institution contributes to the city’s educational and cultural landscape, providing opportunities for higher learning and community engagement.

Recreation and Natural Beauty

Chicopee offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoyment of natural beauty. The Chicopee Memorial State Park, located in the Burnett Road neighborhood, is a popular destination for residents and visitors alike. Formerly known as the Cooley Brook Reservoir and Watershed, this 575-acre park features two 25-acre ponds and is a hub for activities such as swimming, fishing, jogging, biking, and picnicking.
